Recommendations
Q: How often should I check my release aid?
A: We recommend that you run through a safety checklist on all of your equipment (checking for broken pieces on your bow, loose screws on your sight, worn rope on your release aid, etc.) before you shoot. We also recommend that you always be watching for possible problems with your equipment. Proper safety precautions are your responsibility and are extremely important!
Q: Where should I shoot my bow?
A: You should only shoot your bow in an approved range that has been thoroughly tested and examined by you and professionals for safety! You should never shoot with people in front of your bow, even if they are behind the target. Your bow should never be pointed at a person or shot within striking distance of any other individual. IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to make sure that the area in which you shoot is safe for you and for those around you! Be thinking of safety all the time!
Shooting Staff
Q: How can I become a member of your shooting staff?
A: Fill out the application on the Shooting Staff page and send it to the address shown on the form. To be eligible, you must be sponsored by a local dealer, a distributor, or other archery manufacturer. The benefits of this program are many and can be explained on the Shooting Staff page which can be accessed by clicking here.
Boss/XTreme Releases
Q: Why is there travel in my Boss or XTreme series (with cocking bar) release?
A: The Boss and XTreme release aids are the highest quality release aids on the market and are designed to eliminate travel while allowing the archer to set the release heavy or light. These two settings are allowed with two set screws: one for travel and another for sensitivity. The only way travel exists in one of these release aids is if it is adjusted wrong or if the release has been adjusted more than three or four times, rendering the Blue Loc Tite (#242) useless. To eliminate travel, follow the instructions in the next answer.
Q: How do I set my Boss or XTreme series (with cocking bar) release?
A: There are two set screws that work together to adjust your Boss or XTreme release. The set screw nearest your index finger is the fine adjustment and sets the sensitivity of the release. The set screw on the back of the release nearest the cocking bar sets the travel of the release. The two screws work in concert with each other to set the release.
To set the release, we suggest you follow these directions. First, make sure that your screws are coated with Blue Loc-Tite (#242) so that they will not back out on their own! Then, set the sensitivity set screw flush with the surface of the handle. Next, cock the cocking bar and gradually screw the travel set screw clockwise in 1/4 turn increments until the release fires. At this point, back the travel set screw out (counter-clockwise) exactly 1/4 turn. To achieve the heaviest setting without travel, our top pros recommend that you turn the travel screw 3/8 of a turn counter-clockwise. We do not recommend turning the travel screw past this point!!!
To achieve the lightest sensitivity, back the travel screw out 1/4 turn from it firing point and start screwing in the sensitivity set screw (clockwise) until the release fires again. Then back up the set screw 1 full turn. At this point your release will be at its lightest setting!
If you want to make your release aid stiffer, back out (counter-clockwise) the sensitivity set screw only! We recommend that you use blue loc-tite (#242) and do not touch the travel set screw after it has been set.
Standard Caliper Wrist Strap and Hunting T-Handle Releases
Q: How do I set my wrist strap or hunting T-handle release?
A: Place blue loc-tite on the threads of the adjustment set screw each time you adjust these releases. These releases have one set screw for adjustment. To set this screw at its lightest setting, turn the set screw clockwise in 1/4 turn increments until it misfires prematurely. At this point back the set screw out (counter-clockwise) in 1/4 turn increments until the release misfires at a pull of around 50 lbs. or greater. (Never draw back a bow when setting or adjusting your release. Hold the string with one hand and pull the release away from you with the other hand. We recommend that you hold your hands at chest level and pull your elbows apart). At this point, back the screw out (counter-clockwise) 1/4 turn and your release will be at its lightest setting! If you want to make your release stiffer, continue to back the set screw out until you reach your desired sensitivity.
Q: What if the adjustments do not work?
A: Because of the funnel shape of our standard caliper jaws (designed to minimize bowstring wear), some cheaply-manufactured rope loops can become flattened after about 6 shots. If this is your case, we will send you some of our release rope (made by BCY, Inc. or Brownell) free of charge that is manufactured to 30 braids per inch and has a strong and solid core. This should immediately work perfectly. If you want a release aid made specifically for even the most poorly-manufactured rope, try our talon head or new LoopMaster!
You can be assured that T.R.U. Ball releases are manufactured to quality standards by learning about our two tests. Before any release aid is packaged, we pull it to 100 lbs on our hydraulic shooting machine. Then we have a specially designed test to make sure that the gap between jaws is less than ten thousandths of an inch. Our releases are of such a high caliber that we are able to guarantee them against factory defects for life!
LoopMaster and Short-N-Sweet Wrist Strap Releases
Q: How do I set my wrist strap or hunting T-handle release?
A: Place blue loc-tite on the threads of the adjustment set screw each time you adjust these releases. These releases have one set screw for adjustment. To set this screw at its lightest setting, turn the set screw clockwise in 1/4 turn increments (while pulling open on the jaw) until it misfires prematurely.
Sweet Spot II
Q: How do I adjust my Sweet Spot II?
A: Place blue loc-tite on the threads of the adjustment set screw. Set the hook on your release. While pulling up on the hook of your release, turn the adjustment screw in until the release pops open. At this point, back the screw out 3/4 turn and make sure the release will hold before you put substantial weight on it.
Sweet Spot
The Sweet Spot will work great if you can get it set up correctly! Alicia McHenry won the ASA Pro Female Shooter-of-the-Year and World Championship honors in 2002 using her Sweet Spot. Using these directions can help you set your Sweet Spot so that you can reach the peak of perfection!
The micro-adjustment screws work like a seesaw; when one screw is backed out, the other must be tightened until both screws are snug. Use this chart to help you!

Q: How do I set my Sweet Spot for D-Loop use
REMOVE THE RUBBER O-RING!!! Loosen top screw and place blue loc-tite on the threads. Tighten bottom screw until it becomes tight. Tighten top screw until it is tight. If hook does not catch on silver triangle, back bottom screw out slightly and tighten top screw a little more until it holds. Micro-adjust until desired setting is reached, ensuring both screws are tight. Make sure that you can rotate the handle all the way back twice while the thumb lock is pushed forward!
Q: How do I set my Sweet Spot if I wrap the white release rope around the bowstring?
Follow the D-Loop instructions (above), then back the bottom screw out approximately 1/2 turn. Tighten top screw until it is tight. Micro-adjust until desired setting is reached, ensuring both screws are tight. Make sure that you can rotate the handle all the way back twice while the thumb lock is pushed forward!
Q: How do I micro-adjust draw length
When you get close to desired setting, 1/16 of a turn makes a big difference! For super-fine adjustment, tighten one screw more than another using the faster/slower diagram shown above.
Helpful Hints
1) Make sure your set screws have blue loc-tite on the threads to prevent the screws from backing out and changing the setting. This can be done easily by backing one screw out all the way and placing blue loc-tite on the threads and then replacing the screw to its original position and then repeating this step with the other screw.
2) Make sure that the point from the silver triangle is not between the two micro-adjustment screws. When this happens, the release does not seem to adjust and the release does not fire. This can be remedied by making sure both micro-adjustment screws are pressing against a flat side of the triangle.
3) Make sure that you adjust the set screws while the rubber O-ring is not on the head as the instructions in the package state. If you leave the O-ring on, temperature will affect the sensitivity of the release. When temperature rises, the rubber will expand and allow the release to fire. If you adjust the release while the O-ring is not on the head, this will not be a problem.
4) Make sure that you can rotate the handle of the release all the way back twice (while the thumb button is pushed forward) before pulling any weight with the release. If you can rotate the handle back twice, you may be able to set the release lighter. If you can not rotate the release twice, it must be set stiffer or you will have misfires.
To set the release lighter, back the set screw farthest from the handle (the top screw) out a couple of turns, then turn the set screw closest to the handle (the bottom screw) in 1/8 of a turn, and then re-tighten the top screw. At this point, rotate the handle of the release all the way back twice to check for safety. Tighten or loosen accordingly.
5) If none of these help, please call back for an RA # and we will be glad to help repair your release!
